Calao mask

Part of the collection: Collection of Dogonian art

Popularization note

The Dogon masks belong to the secret Awa society, whose members (awa larani) are circumcised men. The word awa comes from the Sigi-so language and is also a term for a complete camouflage costume made of fibres. The structure of Awa is based on age groups, or groups of people initiated at the same time. The mask association is headed by old men who have participated in two consecutive Sigi festivals held every 60 years, called Mulono. From among them, Wala-baga (leader of the masks), a person who is well acquainted with their secrets is chosen. Olubaru, who know the secret Sigi-so language, are also vital initiates in the cult of awa. On the occasion of each Sigi, inne puru young people are chosen, who undergo a long training in seclusion and, on completion, become the new Olubaru. At the end of their training, they are given helpers called Kabaga to assist them in their duties. Next in the Awa hierarchy are men who have participated in one Sigi. Middle-aged men are responsible for the proper preparation and performance of masked dances. The Awa members co-organise religious ceremonies and act as cleaners during them. During Sigi, sowing festivals, baga bundo rituals or Dama ceremonies, they take care of order in the village. Then, all quarrels should cease. Those who disturb the order must expect a heavy fine, mainly financial. The money goes into the fund of the mask association and is used to buy food consumed during the festivities and to obtain items and materials necessary for the rituals.
