Pen container

Part of the collection: Metals

Popularization note

Pen container (may have been used for goose feather quill pens) from the museum’s collection, made of cast and chiselled brass and marble, dating from the late 19th century, part of a desk writing set. A neo-Gothic style container, not very tall and cylindrical in shape, on a square, fairly thick base of yellow marble. The container is finished at the bottom with a round, profiled foot decorated with geometrical ornaments in a two-stripe arrangement. The edge of the container crumpled, with floral rosettes. The whole surface of the container covered with a Gothic-like ornament of rhythmically repeating traceries and acanthus leaves in a double stylised bellflower. The neo-Gothic style began to develop as early as the 18th century, first in England, then in Germanic countries, and finally became popular throughout Europe. It was dominant mainly in architecture as well as arts and crafts (in the German-speaking countries it gained great popularity in writing and printing with the so-called Gothic font). It is one of the historical styles, in Poland it was present mainly in sacral art. It is currently exhibited in the Turkish Apartment on the ground floor.
