Wall lamp

Part of the collection: Lamps, chandeliers and sconces

Popularization note

Wall lamp A wall lamp is a lamp or chandelier, usually wall-mounted (hung on the wall), often with a mirror made of glass or reflective metal. Originally, wall lamps were standing lamps commonly used until the introduction of oil lamps. Their distinctive feature was the placement of the burner next to the oil reservoir rather than above it. The wall lamp in question is double-candle and electrified; it dates from the early 20th century and is made of wood, brass, as well as clear and coloured float glass. It consists of a rectangular disc of wood painted white, fixed to the wall. On the disc, there is superimposed a smaller brass shield with decorative, volute-cut edges with two arms attached. The arms arched upwards, with candle rings in the form of a stylised flower, in which brass sleeves with electric candles are set. The electric candles are made of wax-tinted glass. The bulbs (candlesticks) in the wall lamp are covered by paper lampshades, decorated on the edges with painted gold meander stripes. The wall lamp is additionally decorated with strings of glass beads running from the top to the bottom and strings of beads hanging in garlands between the candlestick arms. The decoration is completed by pendants of various sizes hanging from the arms, made of solid glass in pear-shaped, spherical and rosette shapes. The pendants by the candle rings are dyed maroon and purple. The wall lamp in question comes from the collection of the Potocki family and adorns the bathroom in the Gala Apartment on the first floor of the castle.
