Children in the convent

The depiction of five children in five non-deep cots with high legs and large side walls above the legs. These are cots with orphans in the Ursuline Sisters' convent in Kraków during the German occupation; one of the children is Monika Goldwasser, who was adopted by the Kamiński family.

The image was used as a montage in an account of Monika Goldwasser, who was rescued by Anna and Maksymilian Kamiński, who adopted her from the Ursuline Sisters' convent in Kraków. The Superior, Sister Jadwiga Glemówna, asked Maksymilian to take in at least one child. From Monika Goldwasser's account: My Polish mother went into the room where there were these small, sick girls. And she said [to me] that she looked at all those girls and in fact each child needed care, each one. But there was no way... [...] She was looking at this little boy, who was lying somewhere in the corner. [This child was already so sick that it only looked at her imploringly. And she said to me - these are her words: you know, I couldn't imagine that such a small child could have so much sadness in its eyes, [...] I reached in and took the child in my arms. And she didn't dare put the child back, and the child didn't even have the strength to cry, it just cuddled up. And they left with that child. That child was me.
