Postcard

Part of the collection: Postcards

Popularization note

Postcard with a view of the former Gimnazjalna Street (today B. Żardeckiego Street) shows the buildings of the male middle school founded in 1907 on the initiative of the local social activist, member of the national assembly Bolesław Żardecki. Initially, the school operated as a classic private institution. After nationalization in 1910, it was reopened as a secondary school. It was located in three one-storey buildings erected at the expense of the Land Bank, on plots belonging to Żardecki himself. The buildings visible in the photo on the left were built first, erected by Stanislaw Cetnarski's company in 1908 and 1909. They housed classrooms, offices and a chancellery. In the following year Cetnarski built the third one-storey building according to Antoni Dąbrowski's design, situated across the street. On its façade, just above the entrance, in a small niche, there was a statue of the school's patron, St. Stanisław Kostka, with a date "1910” above it and the inscription "C.K. GIMNAZYUM REALNE” below. The buildings housed a school until 1925. Initially, they remained the property of the Bank, and with time they became the property of Cetnarski, whose company paid for their construction. The builder rented them to the school until it moved to the new building, after which they were sold. Joanna Kluz
