The heavenly hosts, created before the creation of the visible world, adore the majesty of God, expressing His glory. Among the nine angelic choirs mentioned by Dionysius the Areopagite living in 5th or 6th century, only archangels have the privilege of ascending and descending through all the ranks of the angelic hierarchy. They serve as God's governors and guardians of His throne, messengers and heralds. Their presence is attested in the Bible many times. The heavenly hosts’ leader is the Archistrategist Commander, i.e. archangel Michael. The icon of the Council of Archangels reminds us of God's providence in human life and makes us aware of the unity of the earthly Church with the heavenly one. In the middle of the composition, there is a locket with the image of Christ Emmanuel being the centre of the universe. The locket is supported on either side by Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Above them, archangel Raphael stands with his wings spread. Other archangels and the heavenly hosts adore the pre-eternal God with them. As governors of God's majesty, they are portrayed in full honours. Orthodox Christians believe that prayer in front the icon of the Council of Archangels protects against the temptations of the evil spirit, spiritual malaise and bodily temptations, illnesses and adversities.
