Group photograph of girl scouts with the Ursuline Sisters

The group black and white photo in shows girl scouts from the Ursuline Sisters Gymnasium and students of the gymnasium who were not members of the team (upper row). Also in the foreground of the photograph are Ursuline sisters, who were probably the guardians of this group/class, and presumably one of the lay teachers. On the reverse, there are inscriptions in pen. They refer to girls who performed some functions in the scout team. Unfortunately, these people are only mentioned, their place in the photograph is not given. The only person who can be correctly identified is Wanda Wojtasik (fourth from the left in the last row). Presumably, the inscriptions on the reverse of the photograph appeared at certain intervals. It is evidenced by the different handwriting and colours of the inscriptions. The photograph was taken in the establishment "Foto Sztuka" in Krakowskie Przedmieście Street in Lublin, probably in the company's atelier.

In the interwar period, Polish harcerstwo, based on the idea of scouting, experienced a significant development. Numerous men's and women's teams appeared then. The interwar Polish scouting had a decidedly Catholic character. In its programme of educational work, three basic ideas were specified: "love of God, state thought flowing from love of the nation, and life based on truth". The main aim was to shape scouting from within by introducing new methodical solutions and desired contents of educational work. In March 1932, in accordance with the principles of national and state education, new programmes of attempts at organisational ranks were introduced. They placed emphasis on the knowledge of history, cultural heritage and problems of contemporary Poland. In many points, it was in line with the social teachings of the Catholic Church.

Scout troops in educational institutions managed by nuns were rare. The photographs from the Ursuline Sisters Gymnasium are a kind of a unique example. Ursuline sisters' secondary school are a rarity.
