Part of the collection: Postcards
The postcard was published in ca. 1930 by Aleksander Chmiel, community activist from Łańcut, the owner of the Bławat textile shop. The postcards published by Chmiel were made in a characteristic sepia tone and showcased the key buildings in the city, The described postcard shows four local public buildings. Labelled and arranged symmetrically are: 1.Tthe Post Office building, built in 1900 in Sobieskiego Square. It was built as the house of Ignacy Arzt, a doctor, on a plot of land purchased after the great fire of 1820 by the First Ordinate, Count Alfred Potocki. The post office operated here from 1904 to 1961, using the rooms on the ground floor. After Arzt's death, the building was purchased by the Fourth Ordinate, Count Alfred Potocki, who sold the building to the City Hall in 1932. 2. The railway station, built after the opening of the Karl Ludwig railway line in 1861. In May 1915 it was destroyed by retreating Russian troops during the second invasion of the city. Rebuilt, it served residents and passengers for years, serving as a focal point for service and commercial outlets, as well as major industrial plants. 3. The Municipal Court was designed by Antoni Dąbrowski, the builder of the Łańcut estate. The building was erected on Grunwaldzka Street in 1910. The Post-Dominican Building – the oldest brick building in the city, former seat of the Dominican convent until the fire of 1820, later confiscated by the partitioning authorities and turned into a military hospital. After Poland has regained independence, it was taken over by the city. Next to the monastery stands the Chmiel's Townhouse with a visible signboard placed over the entrance of his shop. Joanna Kluz
