Part of the collection: Photographic iconography of Lublin from 1890–1939
Among the monuments commemorating important events in the life of the town of Lublin, there is a modest monument with the date of establishing the oldest public garden for the inhabitants of the city. A cuboid-shaped stone block located near the concert bowl in the Saski Garden stands on a small pedestal. On one of its walls there is an inscription: "1837 the era of establishing a garden for the city of Lublin". It was probably put up a few years after the date, when the cleaning works in the park were completed. In 1837, a committee was established to organize the layout of the park, chaired by engineer Feliks Łodzia-Bieczyński (the originator of the city garden behind the former Warsaw tollbooth). When the trees and shrubs were planted and walking paths marked out the space took on a charming character. Most of the harder work was done by prisoners from the Lublin castle.
The monument was erected in a birch forest, and as it was left unattended after some time it was thrown from the pedestal. It was only restored due to the appeals in "Gazeta Lubelska" in the 1880s. It was then captured in a photo taken by a photographer with a Russian-sounding name, Dagayev. The birch trees that until then had grown up appeared in the background of the photo. The city authorities soon provided security for the entire park, surrounding it with a brick fence. With time, the foundation monument was neglected again. The inscription with the date of the garden foundation is blurred. At the beginning of the 21st century, when the park was revitalized, the monument commemorating its foundation was also renovated.
