The attic insulation

Popularization note

The black and white representation (many shades of grey) of five mattresses and fabrics with which the Krzyształowski family furnished the hiding place of their hidden family - doctor Elias Bander, his wife Regina née Zielonka and their little son Myron. The picture was used as an montage in an account by Irena Senderska-Rzońca née Krzyształowska. Her parents, Józef and Helena Krzyształowski, hid the Bandera family on their farm in Borysław for over six months in an attic - low, 70 centimetres high, but with a floor which their father had his children wash and on which he spread blankets and mattresses to keep them warm in winter. The attic was in a multi-family house, so the insulation also soundproofed the space. See the description of hiding: https://sprawiedliwi.org.pl/en/stories-of-rescue/story-krzysztalowski-family; see also fragments of the account: https://sztetl.org.pl/en/oral-history/138463-irena-senderska-rzoncaThe objects in the drawing are lying on top of each other, side by side. The two largest, mattresses, are light; another object, closest to the bottom left corner, is darker, greyish, unevenly; the two darkest are further apart: one on the left, the other, in a dark checkered pattern, closer to the bottom right corner.
