Portrait of young model

Part of the collection: European classics of modernity

Popularization note

Jerzy Fedkowicz was a Polish Colourist representative who received his education in Moscow, Petersburg, Kraków and Paris. During his stay in the French capital, he became friends with Tadeusz Makowski, Jan Rubczak and Wacław Zawadowski. When the socialist-realist doctrine was in force, he started creating works with a tendency to monumentalise forms. At that time, the human figure played an essential role in his works, often filling almost the entire frame. From 1954, a particular interest in the female nude is visible in the painter's works. Półakt młodej modelki [The Half-Act of a Young Model] from the 1950s was bought to the collection of the National Museum in Szczecin in 1980. The figure is portrayed en face, with her head turned to the left. The left hand is bent at the elbow and rests on the chest, while the right is lowered. The hips are girded with a cloth. The background is patchy, with visible rubbings of ochre and blue. Everything has been painted roughly, with the structure of the paint being clearly emphasised.
