Small vessel

A hand-made clay pot in the shape of a horn was found in Tarnoszyn (the Tomaszów poviat). It was made about 3 thousand years ago by inhabitants of the present area of the Tomaszów county, who belonged to the Lusatian culture at that time.

The shape of the vessel brings a horn to mind. The end of the bottom is sharp, slightly bent. The outer surface is carefully smoothed, in contrast to the inner surface, which was made less carefully. The vessel has survived to the present day in good condition, although conservators dealing with the relic had to fill in minor defects with plaster and glue.

What was such a vessel used for?

Most likely to drink all kinds of liquids. The dimensions of the monument - 10 cm in length and 6 cm in diameter - prove that the vessel was very handy. Its shape meant that it could be put down only after the contents had been drunk. Therefore, we can assume that it could have been used for making toasts during feasts or ritual libations. The evidence for the latter statement can be found in frequent finds of horn-shaped vessels on cemeteries. During the All Souls' ceremonies such vessels were used to make toasts on behalf of the dead or in honour of deities.
