Matthew Potocki

Part of the collection: Painting and drawing

Popularization note

Portrait of Maciej Potocki Painting from the former collection of the Potocki family, kept in the Sarmatian style. It depicts a portrait of Maciej Potocki. Portrait by an unknown painter, from the 17th century, partly repainted in the 19th century during an unsuccessful conservation. The representation retains all the canons of Sarmatian painting – the portrayed person is shown standing, by the table with a helmet, he is dressed in a zupan, a chain-mail and a cuirass, as well as a fur-trimmed delia, and yellow saffian shoes with uppers on his feet. The representation is accompanied by the Pilawa coat of arms in a cartouche and an inscription; the background is provided by a suspended curtain, and in the man is holding a mace in his hand as a sign of power. The painting is currently exhibited on the first floor of the castle, as part of the gallery presenting the Potocki ancestors. In the times of its owners, this gallery was enriched with portraits of the Potocki family from the Łańcut line and the Safina line of silver Pilawa; these paintings were taken abroad by the last entailer of Łańcut, Alfred Potocki, in 1944.
