Part of the collection: Photography
The photograph depicts a fragment of the park of Łańcut, with the moat, from the south-western side, with fragments of lime trees along the moat alley, and the main bridge. This lime tree alley was planted around the moat by princess Izabella Lubomirska (d. 1816) after the embankments, formerly in front of the moat, were removed. The earth embankments, with the walls and moat, constituted the Łańcut fortifications created in the 17th century. At the end of the 18th century, the system was useless, hence, inside the moat, directly at the castle, the first garden was established, with lime tree alleys planted where the embankments around the moat were removed. During upgrade works at the Łańcut residence conducted by the 4rd ordinary, Roman Potocki and his wife Elżbieta nee Radziwiłł, a new, stone bridge was erected to replace the old one; the new bridge had a barrier sculpted in putti and eagles as well as vases, which were used for decorative plants between Spring and Autumn.
