Porcelain cup
1908 — 1939
National Museum in Szczecin
Part of the collection: Szczecin souvenirs
The presented cup is a porcelain souvenir for travellers visiting one of the must-see places in pre-war Szczecin, namely the representative complex of Hakenterrasse (currently Wały Chrobrego), designed and built according to the design of Wilhelm Meyer-Schwartau between 1902 and 1921. The cup was produced in the German Heinrich Selb Bavaria factory, which dates back to 1896 when the Bavarian porcelain painter Franz Heinrich built a muffle furnace in his parents’ house in Selb. At first, he employed a single worker, but in 1901 he was already one of the most important porcelain manufacturers in Germany. After Franz Heinrich's death in 1928, the company continued to grow quite rapidly. In 1929 it took over another factory in Selb – Gräf&Krippner. After the end of World War II, the Heinrich Selb Bavaria factory was the first plant in West Germany to start producing porcelain products, eventually becoming a subsidiary of one of the world’s most famous British porcelain manufacturers – Villeroy&Boch – in 1976. The Heinrich Selb Bavaria brand continues to be popular among collectors today.
