Part of the collection: Terracotta from the Niger
Malian terracotta is found over a vast area and in various regions. Figures representing human figures generally predominate. They are usually done singly, but sometimes in pairs. Terracotta sculptures also depict animals, and snakes are prevalent. They can also be seen on small terracotta figurines. In the area of the ancient city of Djenne-Jeno (also called old Djenne or Djenne, Djenne-Djenno, Jenne-Jeno, or old Jeno); the city was founded in the 3rd century BC and abandoned in the 14th century), sculptures have been found which are distinguished by their precision and distinctive style. The region of old Djenne, apart from figurines depicting human and animal figures, was also famous for its vast number of small vessels, jugs and bottles of various shapes and delicate and beautiful finishes. During the archaeological excavations, larger vessels were also found, e.g., storing water and grain and urns for human remains. The purpose of the terracotta sculptures is an ongoing subject of research by scholars. Some experts believe that they may have represented guardians and tutelary spirits, the dead or images taken from traditional myths and legends.
