Part of the collection: Correspondence from Emilia Endler Ratz
The letter from Halina Altman to Emilia Ratz in Russian on a ruled sheet written on both sides. Additionally, a second sheet of paper, which after being folded into a triangle served as an envelope - no stamps, postmarks visible. The letter mentions the Battle of Lenino, fought against the Germans by the Tadeusz Kosciuszko 1st Infantry Division of about 12,500 soldiers (it was the first battle of a Polish formation forming part of the Red Army). The goal - to break through the German defence - was not achieved, the division was withdrawn, it lost many soldiers: almost 500 were killed, over 500 were missing or taken prisoner, about 2,000 were wounded. Halina Altman writes about the battle to Emilia Ratz: I have a lot of new. We are at the front. On the 12th and 13th [of October] we fought a battle, you have probably already read about it in the newspapers. I, although I was all the time on the front line, luckily came out of it without a scratch. Now we are resting.
