The market on Świętoduska Street, near the former Carmelite church, was the most bustling place in pre-war Lublin, where all its inhabitants met. Here you could buy food, clothes, clay pots, wooden crafts and many other things. The market resounded with various languages - Polish, Russian, Yiddish. You could also hear the dialect of peasants from villages near Lublin, who brought products to the city to sell.
In the 19th century, the square between Świętoduska and Nowa Streets (currently Lubartowska Street) took over from Bernardyński Square (today's Wolności Square). The new market was located on the border between the Jewish and Christian quarters. The stalls were set up in various places. There were permanently located brick storied butcheries, built in the second half of the 19th century.
Numerous inns for merchants arriving on market days functioned in Świętoduska Street. There were also stables nearby. In the 1930s, a bus station was situated behind the Town Hall, in the vicinity of the market, from where city and external buses departed.
The market functioned until the end of World War II. After the war, the "Arkady" café operated in the place of the slaughterhouses for some time. In 1963 a monument to the victims of the Holocaust in the Lublin region was unveiled here, which in 2006 was moved to the square at the intersection of Radziwiłłowska and Niecała Streets. The bus station survived in this place until the 1960s, when a new one was built at Tysiąclecia Avenue.
