Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Lamps, chandeliers and sconces
Hanging electrified candleholder. The first hanging candleholders emerged in Rome, at the time candles were invented. Their development originates back in the middle ages, and they have been changing ever since, however, the candle was replaced by the light bulb. The discussed candle holder from the Łańcut collection holds eight candles; it is built in the classical revival style, from the first half of the 19th century, and it is suspended on four chains, at the top joined radially in a ring, with protruding palmettes. The candle holder body has the form of a bowl, covered from the top with a conical piece. On the cover, there is the figure of a cupid with his hand raised. The body is made of copper sheet painted black, decorated with overlaid four bands of geometric ornamentation, radially joined at the rosette finished with a cone placed at the centre of the bowl. The body – the bowl – is trimmed by a ring decorated with a floral and geometric shape, from which protrude eight slightly bent, raised arms ending with milk glass sleeves with candle-shaped light bulbs. The ornamentation, the chains and the arms are gilded.
