Type H storage vessel (Łosiński, Rogosz 1983, 1986)

Gathering and proper storage of food was one of the basic household activities of the inhabitants of early-medieval settlements. Crops were usually placed in holes, lined with hay or mats woven out of it. Grains for sowing or making flour and groats were stored in large clay vessels, characterised by their large volume. These vessels were made without the use of a potter's wheel, or only partially turned on it. The common feature of the forms with the sharp bend on the body were pieces of material reinforcing the walls of the vessel, which also made lifting and carrying easier. The surfaces of the vessels were decorated with very rich ornamental motifs. The Lębork artefact is a vessel made by hand out of thick rolls of clay, without the use of a potter's wheel. It is characterised by a bag-like shape, and its surface is adorned with four ornamental zones separated by three strips, which feature wide, diagonal notches.
