Part of the collection: Przemysław “Trust” Truściński: Portrait of colonel Berek Joselewicz
Truściński presents Joselewicz in two takes. The first – bigger – in the upper part of the page (in a glorious pose on a horse rearing up – with its forelegs high up) and the second – smaller – in the bottom right corner (with his sabre in his hand, among the soldiers). Both figures depicted from the side, presenting their profile. Truściński’s Joselewicz is similar to the iconic portrayals of the colonel: with thick, light-coloured moustache and the typical military hat (bearskin cap) on his head – these elements reappear in the drawings, lithographies and paintings of Kossak or Henryk Pillati (Śmierć Berka Joselewicza w Kocku [The Death of Berek Joselewicz in Kock], 1867, (collection of The National Museum in Warsaw). This black and white version of the artwork was made with copic markers. It is a collage of elements drawn on different sheets of paper then cut out and put together. The work was then copied to serve as an outline for the coloured version.
