Men's peaked cap

The men's cap for a festive costume, called a cornet, was worn in the village of Rusły, in the municipality of Podedworze. It was hand-made by a tailor from brown self-made cloth. One strip of cloth makes a wrap around the head, the other, of the same width, is turned up on top and trimmed at the lower and upper edges with orange woollen cord. The upper part of the cap is made of a square piece of fabric with cut corners, which after sewing together and sewing on the underside of the casing gives a flat square peak measuring 20 cm by 20 cm. This cap was worn in autumn and spring until 1914 and was a kind of set with a dress, which was made of the same material and usually decorated with a cord in a similar colour.

When outdoors, men wore headgear appropriate to the situation. In the Lublin region, it was customary to lift the cap slightly from the head when greeting or bowing from a distance. It was not allowed to place it on the table, as it was believed that if this rule was not observed, moles would dig in the garden. Even in the second half of the 20th century, it was still customary to put a cap in the coffin of the deceased, in the belief that he would need it in the next world for the outfit in which he was buried.
