Mantel clock
Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów
Part of the collection: Clocks
The clock, with a simple mechanism in an equally simple case, is probably a reassembly using an existing cabinet, a clock face with one hand left over from an earlier clock and a matching spring mechanism. The cuboidal wooden cabinet with square glazed doors is lockable. The dial is too large for the glazed surface, the door frames partially cover the edges of the dial and fragments of the numerals painted on it. The two concentric circles on the dial are marked with gold quarter hours, half hours and hour markings. The mechanism has a spring drive, anchor catch and long, light pendulum. A hole has been cut in the bottom of the cabinet to allow the pendulum to move freely. There are clear analogies between the dial decoration of this clock and the dials of the Wilanów tower clock. A slightly convex dial of the wall clock without mechanism, of identical dimensions and decoration, with the same indications and hands without a cabinet case, is preserved in the Museum’s storage room. On its back there is only a metal case originally containing the mechanism. The clock was probably intended for the official rooms in the backhouses of the Wilanów Palace.
