Part of the collection: Folk craft of the Lublin Region (19th/20th c.)
Skirt for the festive outfit from Krzczonów comes from Bychawka, in the Bychawa commune. It was made by a dressmaker in 1910. It is machine-sewn of dark purple wool made of four pieces of material, 73 cm long and 260 cm wide. In the upper part, almost the entire width of the fabric is arranged in pleats, sewn into a narrow strip made of the same material, called a bias tape, the ends of which, when cut, protrude beyond the belt and are used to tie the skirt. At the opening at the front the skirt is smooth not folded to save material; this part was covered with an apron. At the bottom, from the inside, the skirt is trimmed with a strip of grey linen, called the underpinning, and on the edge with a black ribbon, called a brush, which was to prevent the edges from fraying. The skirt is decorated with a wide belt (17 cm) of black factory tulle lace with a stylized floral ornament, which sewn in the lower part.
The presented skirt was worn by married women near Krzczonów in the last period of use of festive outfit, i.e. before World War I. Its colour is an evidence to it, and the subdued ornamentation indicates the next stage of transformation of the outfit. It had already been not so colourful, at least not those elements that were worn by mature women. The caftan worn over this skirt was very similarly decorated, the only decoration was a factory lace, and not the colourful ribbons or gold tapes that were sewn onto the skirt and corset in the previous models.
