Evening

Part of the collection: European classics of modernity

Popularization note

Wieczór [Evening] is a picture by Waclaw Zaboklicki painted in 1907 during his stay in France, where he lived from 1904 to 1912. The view of the bay breaking into the land with a sharp wedge is shown from above the hill, as the artist used unobvious perspectives in his works. The foreground shows vegetation on the right, clearly outlined with irregular contours. In the background, there is a bay with a concave curve and a beach on the right. The surface of the water is bright, contrasting, standing out from the dark representation. It leads into the depth of the perspective where a facility is painted with a contrasting single white house on the right. On the left, an utterly unlit boat with two masts is in the foreground, with smaller boat silhouettes visible in the depths. The evening time and the view of dark, heavy storm clouds and the characteristic juxtaposition of forms evoke a sense of melancholic mood, which emanates from the canvas.
