Russian carriage, Russia, 1871. The Russian sculptor Eugen Lanceroy created numerous small-size depictions of horses. In his work, he drew inspiration from his studies of equestrian culture during his numerous journeys, particularly through the Asian governorates of Russia. Lanceroy’s sculptures were later cast in bronze in Tula. His legacy included 400 small-size sculptures depicting horses, riders and harnesses. Purchased for the collection of the Castle Museum in Łańcut collection in the 1960s, signed by the Chopin foundry in Tula, Lanceroy’s sculpture depicts a picturesque peasant one-horse, two-wheeled cart with drawbars and an arc over harness, driven from the saddle. The harness and the vehicle, typical for Russia, are very primitive, as is the saddle of the boy driving with vigour. In the farm wagon, we see three peasant women seating on straw. Taking into consideration the numerous trips of the author, it can be assumed that the depicted carriage was seen by Lanceroy in nature. Aldona Cholewianka-Kruszyńska
