Królewska Street overlooking the New Town Hall

Today's Królewska Street runs on the site of the former dry moat surrounding the Old Town hill from the side of Krakowska Gate. In the 16th century, a market square called Korce was established here. The name referred to the measure of loose goods traded outside the city walls. In time, mansions and palaces as well as churches and monasteries were built here. In 1611, King Sigismund III Vasa allowed part of the defensive walls to be demolished, paving a passage from the Krakowska Gate to the Jesuit buildings, where the Archcathedral now stands. In the 19th century, this section of the street was transformed into Królewska Street, named after Tsar Alexander I, the ruler of the Kingdom of Poland, who visited Lublin in 1816. Its buildings are the remains of old burgher houses, magnates' residences and temples.

At the end of the street, from the side of Krakowskie Przedmieście, stands the Lublin Town Hall building. It used to be the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Scapular, erected in the early 17th century by the Discalced Carmelites. After the fire of Krakowskie Przedmieście in 1802, the monks left their seat. The building was bought by the city. The restored building was intended for the municipal authorities, formerly located at the Old Town Square. The new Town Hall, known as the Magistrate, was destroyed during the bombardment of Lublin in September 1939. After the war, it was rebuilt. It still houses the municipal administration offices.

Many buildings at Królewska Street have an interesting history. The corner building adjacent to Kozia Street once housed a theatre, called Komedialnia. A little further on was St. Peter's Church, built in the 17th century, which used to belong to the Bernardine Sisters. In 1920 the church was handed over to the Jesuits, who have remained here ever since. In the further vicinity was the Bishop's Palace, where the bishops of Lublin lived from 1847 to 1876.
