Little Satyr

Little satyr The marble bust of the little satyr is not a uniform work. The head was made in Rome, probably in the 2nd century, and a fragment of the torso and the pedestal was added by the sculpture restorer in the 18th century. The little satyr is depicted with a child's face, with wands on his forehead. His head is decorated with a wreath made of a vine branch. Satyrs are forest deities in Greek mythology, they were part of the retinue of Dionysus, the god of wine, dancing and singing in his honour. They were depicted in half-human and half-animal form, with goat-like legs, tail and ears. Princess Izabela Lubomirska (1736-1816), the owner of the Łańcut Castle, might have purchased the bust of the little satyr during her stay in Italy in the years 1785-1786.
