A letter
1945
Museum of the history of Polish Jews
Part of the collection: The correspondence of the Nieznanowski family
The letter with preserved grey envelope (stamps detached; the envelope was probably used in Magnitogorsk as a card for mathematical calculations). Written by Michał and Hadasa Nieznanowski the day before the gates of the Warsaw Ghetto were closed. The parents write to their sons that they are happy that the sons are provided for the winter and that their conditions have improved; "do you cook your own dinners at home? - asks the mother. They still hope to get out of Warsaw and to be reunited with their sons. They report that they have written to Uncle Lejzer about this. They have already realised that trying to leave is impossible in Warsaw. "The frosts are not with us yet. We are all healthy and try to get us [...] this letter stayed with us for a fortnight because I was waiting for a card from you". Uncle Mojsze added (spelling slightly modified): "Dear Josek why does Leizer correspond with you so densely did you write to him about Our[e] arrival and write me if there is also a saddlery job at your place [...] you have the address from your cousin from Solec in this letter". He sends greetings to Feliks Nieznanowski from his friends - he is in touch with them ('they come to us').
