Faience flat plate

Part of the collection: ceramics

Popularization note

A faience flat plate with a gently raised rim, shaped into six shallow arches, forming a six-leaf form. The main, central decorative motif is a rooster, depicted in a concave-convex relief technique, painted underglaze in dark green, brown, and burgundy colours The ground around the rooster is covered with a greenish-yellow hue. The rooster is shown facing left, depicted mid-stride. Its plumage is two-toned: the front and tail are greenish-black, while the neck and body are shades of brown, naturally lightened on the raised areas of the relief to highlight the feathers. The head and comb are in burgundy. The surrounding background features subtly indicated tufts of grass, three stalks of grain, and six flowers. The vegetation is complemented by a large three-leaf motif placed beneath the rooster's feet. The flowers and stalks are painted in burgundy and orange. In some areas, there is visible paint loss. The remaining part of the plate retains the cream-yellow tones of the glaze.
