Part of the collection: Orient
The walls of the bowl are convex at the base, they extend upwards in a slight curve and spread cup-like at the spout. The inside walls and the bottom of the vessel are filled with lacquer. The outside of the bowl is covered with a light brown braid made of very thin bamboo bast, arranged almost on the whole surface in a pattern with regular intervals, made of meandering lines, emerging from the arms of a right-hand swastika. The decoration of the bast is arranged in a simple basketweave only on the foot and at the base. The edge of the spout is finished with a strip of thick bast covered with black lac. Core from resin-impregnated hemp canvas, lac, braided bamboo bast. Japan or China. 17th/18th century.
