Part of the collection: Set of archaeological relics found in the Lublin Region
An iron spearhead with a unique silver inlay is a part of the weapon placed in the grave of a warrior from the early 3rd century AD.
The grave of a representative of the Przeworsk culture was discovered by accident in 1959. The artefacts found were sent in 1960 to the Regional Conservator of Monuments in Lublin, and then to the collection of the Archaeology Department of the Lublin Museum.
Apart from the ornamented spearhead, the burial of the warrior was accompanied by an iron umbo (top of a shield) covered with copper sheeting, two iron spurs, two iron javelin spearheads ritually bent and broken, a bronze lathe (probably a javelin spar fitting), and an originally bent iron sword with a copper inlay depicting the Roman gods Mars and Victoria.
The blade leaf is long and slender, with a rib at the base of the cylindrical and short sleeve. On both parts of the spearhead are decorations inlaid with silver, signs of symbolic significance: spherical triangles, points, double forks. They resemble religious symbols (possibly magic or ownership signs) - tamgs. Some researchers assume that they may have been adopted from the Sarmatians.
The warrior buried at the site of the present village of Podlodów was a member of the military elite of the Przeworsk culture, associated with the Lugian tribes, which included the Vandals. The reconstructed warrior figure, together with his rich representative weaponry, is one of the main attractions of the permanent archaeological exhibition in the Lublin Museum.
