The way to the toilet

Popularization note

The depiction in the distance, presumably, of a miller Dwoliński hiding Mira and her mother Adela Krum, fearful of being spotted by neighbours for various activities associated with hiding. The image was used as a montage interlude in Mira Ledowski-Krum's account. It illustrates the everyday reality of hiding in the mill in Beremiany: the necessity of taking a bucket-niche with waste from the hiding place every evening. Krum Dwoliński, who was hiding Mira and her mother Adela, went with the bucket to a privy shared by all the neighbours, which was located far from the houses, near the road, by the fence. As Mira Ledowski-Krum notes: , If any of the neighbours felt it, they would know that there were Jews there. Because the people living in those houses would go to that little house in any weather.
