Jug

Pottery, especially jugs, pots and bottles of various sizes, were commonly used in villages, as solid clay vessels were always needed in rural households. In the 18th and 19th centuries, there were many pottery workshops in Western Pomerania producing ceramics available for customers of different financial possibilities. Glazed and decorated dishes were the most expensive but also the most beautiful. In the last quarter of the 19th century, craft pottery started to decline because, at that time, industrial production of pottery on a mass scale started to develop dynamically. Once prosperous, family workshops began to decline. Only the best and the economically strongest survived. After World War I, Pomerania experienced another but short-lived increase in pottery production. The presented jug is distinguished by an attractive form, in which the most characteristic feature is the high collar ended with a small, disproportionate to the whole spout, which together with the strongly bent collar and bursting belly creates an aesthetically successful composition. The vessel is covered with a cream-coloured semi-matt glaze. The decoration was made with ceramic enamels, i.e., enamel paints fused into the glaze at a higher firing temperature.
