Venus chastising Cupid

Part of the collection: Ceramics

Popularization note

Venus chastising Cupid A bisque figural group depicting the half-naked goddess bending down to strike Cupid, who is wrenching himself out of her arms, with her right hand. Cupid is holding his hands up, his face contorted in pain. The stone floor is overgrown with moss. The bisque is placed in a rectangular display case with glass walls enclosed in bronze frames, with a wooden platform painted brown and decorated with classicist bronze ornaments. It was made in a factory in Lunéville (Lorraine), active from 1766 until 1780, according to François Boucher's design. The modeller was Paul-Louis Cyfflé. It is a non-porcelain bisque similar to faience, with a yellowish colour, the marble paste base whiter in colour. The factory in Lunéville made products from Lorraine clay with a yellowish colour, similar to delicate faience, known as terre de Lorraine, as well as from white pâte de marbre.
