Part of the collection: Malarstwo i rysunek

Popularization note

Portrait of Jerzy Radziwiłł The painting of author unknown dates back to the 19th century, it depicts a portrait of Jerzy Radziwiłł as an elderly man in armour of Western European type, with one hand supported on a visor lying on a table, in the other he holds a sword in a scabbard. The painting refers to the Sarmatian style, preserving all the elements defining this type of painting (the portrayed person is shown standing, with insignia of power or function, a table, a suspended curtain in the background and inscriptions accompanying the representation, defining the merits and functions of the portrayed). Flat, linear image, veristic in nature (without embellishment). Jerzy Radziwiłł of the Trąby coat of arms, also known as Hercules (born in 1480, died in April 1541) was Grand Hetman of Lithuania, Grand Marshal of Lithuania, Castellan of Vilnius and Troki, Voivode of Kiev and father of Barbara Radziwiłłówna, Queen of Poland, beloved wife of King Sigismund Augustus, the last representative of the Jagiellonian dynasty on the Polish throne. He was an outstanding, talented leader, meritorious in wars with the Tatars, the Teutonic Order and Russia. No wonder that the Potocki family, as the owners of the Łańcut Castle, wanted to have his portrait in their collection, especially since the fact that he was the father of the Queen of Poland also ennobled, in a way, the Potocki family, related to the Radziwiłł family, especially through the second marriage of Roman Potocki, the Third Entailer of Łańcut, with Elżbieta, née Radziwiłł (from the Berlin line). On the frame of the painting there is an additional plaque informing who the portrait depicts.
