Oval platter from dinner service

Part of the collection: Ceramics

Popularization note

Oval platter from a dinnerware set with a pattern of vine leaves. The platter is part of a dinnerware set made in a porcelain factory in Vienna. The factory was established in 1718 as the second porcelain factory in Europe, after Meissen. It operated until 1864. Breakfast- and dinnerware, as well as coffee, tea, and hot chocolate sets, were the fundamental part of the Viennese factory's production, especially since the fourth quarter of the 18th c. The dinnerware set, part of which was purchased by the Łańcut Museum, was made during the period when the Vienna factory was headed by Mathias Niedermayer (1805-1827). The purchased part of the set consists of nineteen pieces: six semi-deep plates, small vases, two round serving dishes with lids, two square serving dishes, a boat-shaped serving dish, two oval platters, a round bowl, two insert plates. It is a set in the classicist style. It is decorated with a trail of light- and dark-green vine leaves brightened with yellow and with a scattering of such individual leaves. The above platter is oval in shape and has a foot. It is decorated with a trail of vine leaves on the lip; in the centre of the well, there is a twig of double vine leaves and around it, a scattering of single vine leaves. A gilded stripe separates the lip of the platter from the well, emphasises the edge of the lip. Barbara Trojnar
