The portrait photograph of Benzion Grossbart

The portrait photograph (secondary print) of Benzion Grossbart, Emilia's father. The photograph was taken in the Kraków ghetto between 1940 and 1943 by the Germans, for documents. Emilia found it after the war in the archives of the Jewish Religious Community in Kraków.

In August 1939, when war was already expected, the sister of Emilia Leibel's husband, Giza Krüger, with her adult daughter, Irena Krüger, and her in-laws decided to leave for Jarosław. Emilia Leibel and her daughter Halina joined them. Emilia Leibel wanted to stay with her parents in Kraków and encouraged them to travel east, but Benzion Grossbart did not want to leave his hometown. However, he forced his daughter to leave for Jarosław as soon as possible.

During her exile, Emilia Leibel continued to correspond with her parents, who remained in Kraków. Initially they got on relatively well, her father getting a job at a slaughterhouse thanks to an old acquaintance from Hamburg. Emilia Leibel learned about the death of her parents through correspondence with a school friend. Karola Wetstein informed her that the Grossbarts had been deported to Bełżec in the penultimate transport.
