Jerzy Fedkovich began his artistic education in Moscow, where he took lessons from 1910 to 1913 with Ivan Bolshakov and Konstantin Yuon. Then, to develop his skills, he moved to St. Petersburg. From 1915 to 1921, he attended the studio of Wojciech Weiss at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Between 1921 and 1923, he was on a scholarship from the French government in Paris. Martwa natura [Still Life] from around 1930 by Fedkowicz was acquired for the collection of the National Museum in Szczecin in 1965. The painting dates from when the artist was part of the Polish Colourist movement in his work. Colour was at the centre of his interest. From then on, the representation on canvas was no longer subordinated to chiaroscuro modelling of forms but to the dynamics of applying colour spots; often, the shape was defined by a black contour. His works began to be dominated by a colour range that was based on warm browns, delicate greens, blues and greys.
