Henryk Lubomirski

Part of the collection: Sculptures

Popularization note

Henryk Lubomirski Henryk Lubomirski (1777–1850) was the son of Józef and Ludwika née Sosnowska. From about 1783 he was brought up by Princess Izabela Lubomirska née Czartoryska, widow of Stanisław Lubomirski related to Henryk’s father, owner of the Łańcut castle. In 1799 Lubomirska had bought for him the Przeworsk estate, which she then presented to him in 1802. Henryk inherited from the Princess her palace in Vienna and part of the art collection kept in Łańcut. In 1818, after the death of the Princess (1816), Lubomirski transferred these collections to his palace in Przeworsk. Over time, he enriched them with his own acquisitions. In 1823 he made an agreement with Józef Maksymilian Lubomirski to include his collection to the foundation in Lviv, later called the Ossoliński National Institute, from which they were separated under the name of the Princes Lubomirski Museum. He was a Knight of Malta from 1796 and a member of the Galician States from 1817. He was married to Teresa Czartoryska, had three daughters and a son, Jerzy Henryk. The marble bust of Henryk Lubomirski was made in 1818 by the eminent Swiss sculptor Josef Maria Christen (1769–1838) who worked in the Classicist style. It presents the prince as a mature man and is his idealised and heroized image, following the example of Antiquity. The massive, naked torso of the portrayed is cut into the shape of a herma. The modelling of the bust is smooth, linear. The hair, which forms a compact mass of spirally twisted locks, is meticulously worked. The bust has been in the collection of the Łańcut castle since 1948. It was taken over by the museum from the Museum Depot in Przeworsk established in the Lubomirski Palace, nationalised in 1944, and including the local art collection. Barbara Trojnar
